Monday Workout: 4 miles (36:48)
I was really happy with my run tonight. I went out around 6:30 pm and it was nice and cool. My goal was to run comfortably hard and what I thought I might be able to hold for a half marathon. Now I think this might be wishful thinking for me, but I felt good and only pushed it really hard at the end. I haven’t worn my heart rate monitor since MAY but I think I would have been happy to see what it was tonight. Maybe I will get it back out again… It just always frustrates me when it gets high on certain days and I don’t feel like I’m even working that hard. I am glad I wore it for previous half and full marathons because it is so interesting to see later. My goal for my full marathon last spring was to not let my heart rate get to a certain point, but I ended up not even looking at it.
Elevation from my run tonight. Nothing major, mile 2-3 wore me out because it was pretty uphill the whole time.
Currently on week 8 of my training plan
Confession… I skipped my “back down” long run this past weekend. Who am I?!?
For the other races I have trained for, I obsessively followed a training plan. Sometimes that is not good and I should listen to my body more. Other times, like training for my first full, I think it led to my success of a great first full marathon. This fall, I have just not been following the half marathon plan I was so excited to create with Colby. I’ve done all the major long runs so far, which have all been under 10 until this upcoming weekend but I have skipped tons of mid-week runs and two back down long runs. I’m just too busy right now and I am trying to not stress myself out over this. I’m fairly certain I will PR at this half marathon. I’m not trying to be cocky in saying that, because yes I could completely fall apart… but the last half I did was almost a year ago…
From my “Races” tab above:
May 2, 2010- Pittsburgh Half Marathon: 2 hrs 13 min 55 sec
October 2, 2010- Disney Wine & Dine Half Marathon: 2 hrs 7 min 36 sec
December 5, 2010- Nittany Valley Half Marathon: 2 hrs 8 min 51 sec
I’ve run three half marathons before. My first was Pittsburgh (I ran the full this past year) and I was still so new to running. I had met Colby that winter and he convinced me I was ready for it. A few weeks later, I signed us up for the Disney Wine & Dine half. I trained so hard for this and it really paid off. Colby also paced me and stayed with me the whole time. I’m not sure we could have found each other at the end because it was so crowded in Epcot! After Disney, my IT band went crazy on me and I took a lot of time off in November. I found my Brooks Adrenalines and foam roller and got rid of the pain right before the Nittany Valley half. This half is insane. Seriously. It is in Penn State and the hills are unbelievable. It was also like 10 degrees that morning. I didn’t train, ran HARD for the very beginning of it because I knew it was all hill from mile 9-13.1 and was only a little over a minute slower than the Disney race! Oh yeah… I did wear my heart rate monitor for the Penn State race… wanna see this crazyness?
Yeah, I thought you might enjoy seeing that my heart rate hit 194 on that half. Come on PA people, don’t you wanna do this race? It’s so hard it’s stupid and I’m definitely doing it again this year
I know I’m running better than I was a year ago and my speed has started to pick up. Originally, my goal for my upcoming half was to get as close to 2:00 as possible. Yes, that is a big goal and I haven’t been able to train like I wanted to this season. To get a 2:00:57 half I would need an overall pace of 9:14. Not sure if I’m there yet, but I do think I’m very capable of staying under a 9:30 pace for the whole thing, which would be 2:04:27 or under.
So, I’m not stressing over this training plan anymore. I know I’m stronger and I’m a better runner than I was a year ago. I’m just going to focus on having quality long runs for the next few weeks and do as much mid-week running as I can. Most weeks that is not going to be 3 times like I want, but I’m okay with that.
