Getting Ready For DC

Things have been busy the past few weeks.  I’m so ready for summer and nice weather!  A few weeks ago, I was supposed to run 10 miles on the weekend to prepare for the Nike Women’s Half in DC – April 27.  It rained all weekend, so I ran after work on a Monday with Amy.  Looking back at the stats now, it doesn’t look that bad – but it was a bad run for me.  I had high hopes of really pushing my pace and I got so tired.  The wind didn’t help and it is tough doing a long run in the afternoon.  After that 10 miler, I was having a hard time feeling motivated for the race.  Since I PR-ed last year, I really want to again on the same course.

I started feeling better the next week and had a few good short runs.  The one above made me really happy.  Negative splits after school and it was windy.

This past weekend, I decided to change my training schedule.  I ran my 12 miler a week early, so I can back down this weekend with 8.  I want to go to the race with fresh legs and I’m going to have a hard time fitting in any long run this weekend with Easter.  I’m still teaching BODYPUMP over the next two weeks, so I need to take it easy.  My gym isn’t launching BODYPUMP 89 until May 28, but I have it memorized and ready to go.  I listened to the music two full times while I ran my 12 miler and did the choreography in my head.  That will make any long run go a little faster!  I really like 89 and the music has grown on me so much.

Besides all of that…

Baby Bella got her first hair cut!!  She did great job and weighed in at 4 lbs at the vet this past weekend.  She is almost 5 months old (20 weeks today).

She can finally jump up and down off the couch and chairs.  I about had a heart attack when I looked over and saw her laying on the top of the couch like a cat!! We are so scared of her falling/jumping off the sides or back of the couch so we always keep our eyes on her!!  You can see her playpen in the “piano” room.  She has taken over our house! :)

IMG_2588She LOVES the warmer weather and we spent so much time outside this past weekend.  It was 80 degrees on Sunday!  She loves laying in the grass with a good stick :)

9 Miler and Graduation

I ran my 9 mile long run this morning with Amy!  It went very well and I had a goal to not walk and keep my splits under 9:30.  I just missed my goal with a 9:31 mile 2, but was so happy my average pace was 9:25.  I was tired, but I haven’t done a long run like this in a long time. I was happy to pretty much reach my goal even while I talked to Amy the whole time.

Next weekend I have 10 miles and I want my splits to be under 9:25 and hopefully have a faster overall pace.  If I can gradually increase the speed of my long runs a little bit, I will feel better about race day! It is coming up soon! April 27!

Today was Bella’s last day of puppy school at Pet Smart!  She even got to wear a little graduation cap for a picture! She is getting a little shaggy, so we are hoping to get her first hair cut in a few weeks.  We need it to warm up!!

5K PR at Home!

Hey!  I’m officially on week 7 of my training plan and feeling great!! I was sick during weeks 5 and part of 6, so I’m finally feeling healthy!  Woo hoo!  No long run for week 6, just a 3.1.  However, I’ve never actually tried to race the 3.1 … so I decided to push it!

I started with an easy 1 mile warm up since I missed one of my mid-weeks.  I did a 1 mile cool down after the 5K to finish with 5.1 miles.

My best time so far!! I’ve NEVER had a good 5K race… I always go out too fast and blow up.  I know this isn’t an official “PR”  … so it would be my personal best? PB?  I really want to start pushing myself on some of the mid-week runs to work on speed.  I just barely broke 2 hours last year at the Nike half, so I’m hoping to beat that!!

Baby girl waits for me in her play pen while I run.  Can’t wait to take her out in her jogging stroller for a run together! :)  I know… I’m crazy.

Half Marathon Training Updates

nwm14

Hello!! I took a little blog break, but I’m back!  Life got busy with our new baby Bella, work and training for the Nike DC Half Marathon!  After SO MUCH SNOW I am finally off the treadmill and outside for most of my runs.  I’ve been pretty good about staying close to my training plan, but I’ve had to change around what days I run.  Most weeks I’ve been running on both Saturday and Sunday to make up for a missed mid-week run.  Our puppy just wants all of our attention when we come home from school :)

I am about to finish week 6 of my training plan today.  No long run for this week, but I am supposed to “race” a 5K.  I missed a mid-week, so after I finish blogging and pick up this puppy off my lap (aww) I’m going to warm up for 1 mile, “race” my 5K and then cool down with another mile.  I’ve been running most of my long runs with my friend Amy and we’ve been trying to keep around a 9:30 pace.  I’ve been sick the past week, so it has been tough.  I’ve been trying to push it on my shorter runs.  Below are a few mid-week runs from March…

I’ve been aiming for negative splits!  It motivates me to run harder.

This was my run yesterday.  It was SO WINDY!!! I would hit spots where it felt like I had a parachute on my back!  I didn’t pay attention to my watch too much because I was trying to stay comfortable in the wind, but I should have ran my 3rd mile faster to keep the negatives.  Oh well!

Now onto the important stuff – my baby!  She is SO sweet.  We’ve been taking puppy classes at PetSmart and she graduates next weekend!  She is pretty good with her tricks and potty training.  We are still struggling with some biting when we are playing with toys and she gets our hands.  She also went through a phase where she was scared to go outside.  I think all the snow melted and she could see everything so she would go the bathroom and run straight back to the door.  We’ve been taking her farther away from the house and working on walking outside.

The weather was great yesterday (besides the wind)! We went over to my parents and Colby, my Mom, Bella and I walked almost a mile to their park!  We were so proud!

My Mom talked me into this one…. a JOGGING STROLLER for pets!  This will be for the summer when we take her to Lake Placid, NY for Colby’s Ironman!  We are taking her with us, and I think this will really help out on race day when we are outside all day.  I’m hoping she will like it enough for me to take her on runs too!
