No Excuses Summer!

Colby and I just got back from Disney World!!  We had an amazing 8 day trip to the happiest place on earth and it was great!  Since he just finished his half Ironman on June 9th, he was really looking forward to this vacation.  I was a little nervous thinking about this trip and how we decided to go with the meal plan, but I ate really healthy most of the time (besides the desserts that came with every meal!) and we did TONS of walking! I even wore my Garmin a few days and was shocked to find out we walked probably 7-9 miles almost every day! I’ll post more about Disney later and how to survive it without gaining weight because I think I even lost a pound or two.  Who would have thought??

While we were in Disney, Colby and I talked about our fitness plans non-stop.  He is ready to get back to his triathlon training right away and has a sprint tri coming up in 3 weeks.  I decided I have NO EXCUSES not to exercise all the time and eat healthy this summer!  Besides private music lessons and teaching BODYPUMP, I have a very free schedule and I should take advantage of all that time!  I really want to run more often, even if it is short mileage.  I’ve ran 3 miles the past two days and I’ve been trying to memorize the new BODYPUMP 86 choreography. I also took a 30 minute spin class followed by CXWORX at the gym before our trip and loved it so that is on my schedule too!

Triple Workout Day

Summer has officially begun for me and I am loving it!  Colby did his half Ironman this past weekend and rocked it!  I will post tomorrow all about his race.  We got back yesterday and I only ran 3 miles on the treadmill at the hotel once.  I had plenty of time today to workout… so that is what I did!

I asked Colby to run 3 easy miles with me outside.  His legs were sore but he was okay going slow with me.  We walked a little too.  Tonight, I did something I haven’t done in a longgggg time… I went to a SPIN class!!  Two years ago I tried to get into spin, but I just couldn’t.  My new gym has all  RPM (Les Mills spin class) and they have a 30 minute class two times a week.  Tonight they had the 30 minute class and CXWORX was right afterwards.  I really loved it!!  30 minutes was just enough, because I’m not sure I could have done much more tonight.  Spin is just so hard when you aren’t used to it!  I loved that it was in a separate spin room and it just had such a cool atmosphere.  I really liked the instructor too!

I made an awesome smoothie this morning after my run.  I haven’t made a smoothie in a few weeks so it tasted great.  Chocolate Vega protein, Silk almond milk, PB2 powder, spinach, frozen banana, frozen strawberries and chia seeds! YUM!

Colby and I ran together Thursday after school and were aiming for an easy 3 mile run.  I must have wanted to push it because we ended up around a 9:25 min pace. BUT our Garmins were totally off for the first mile! We started in a spot that always messes up my Garmin (I probably need to update it) and it said I was running between 12-14 min pace when I know I was around 9.  I ended up pushing my first mile and Colby said his beeped at around a 9:07 mile. Mine said 9:43!! I know I was pushing it so it probably was around 9:15 or less.

Thursday was also our “negative 1″ anniversary (we are getting married Oct. 6, 2012) and Colby surprised me with roses :)  (Awww I know … we are sickeningly sweet) I was so happy so I wanted a picture.

This morning, I convinced my friend Anne to double up on classes with me and try the new RPM spin class our gym offers then BodyPump.  Anne and I have tried the regular spin class our gym offers and we have never really gotten into it.  This class started at 7:30 this morning and I was tired.  It was hard to get out of bed, but I knew she was waiting for me.  We decided that the RPM class (Les Mills – company that created BodyPump) was better than regular spin class, but it just isn’t for us. I get bored and I don’t like being on a stationary bike that long.  I liked that there was a song track like BodyPump and the constant music made it go a little quicker. I think I get frustrated with spinning because I never know how intense I should have my resistance. I look around and everyone is going faster than me but I have no idea if I have it too hard or too easy.

I’m glad I tried it, but I’m not going to force myself to do it again. I don’t think I burned 675 calories in this class at all. I probably wasn’t working hard enough but I was definitely sweating. Maybe more like 400 calories? Who knows…it made me really tired for BodyPump and I felt like I couldn’t enjoy it as much. I had to bump down my weights for Pump because I haven’t been there in over a week!

Have you tried any new classes/workouts? Long run this weekend?? I’m going for 7-8 tomorrow because next weekend is my half-marathon!

What ever happened to Pilates?

Wednesday Workout: 30 min. abs class, 1 hr spin class

I taught music lessons from 9:30-12:00 today and was happy to finish a little earlier today and relax. On my way home, I stopped at our local health food store that I went into for the first time a few weeks ago.


I knew what I was going there for…

I had the Bliss-Berry flavor before, but tried Katalyst’s Ginger Devotion today and it was delicious. This is turning into an expensive tea habit. BUT, it is the same price as a Sheet’s frozen soy chocolate mint mocha (and a lot less calories!) and much healthier.  Every once in awhile should be okay! It is strange how the first time I tried this tea I didn’t really like it, but now I think it is amazing and love the taste of it! I ended up spending 15 minutes talking to the owner of this health store today about the kombucha. She said they used to sell the GT brand but since it is from California, they were always racing to make sure it didn’t expire before it was sold at the store.  This brand is based out of Maine and is easier for the store to keep. I told her I think it tastes just as good as the other brand!

I also picked up two more of these :)  I really like the honey PB flavor but just can’t bring myself to buy an entire container when I still have that nasty Target one and a full jar of yummy PB I need to finish!

Pilates!

How did I forget about pilates while I’m on this cross-training kick to make me a stronger runner? I thought about this today when I saw a guest blogger on The Fitnessista. Cassey @ Blogilates is this amazing and gorgeous pilates instructor that posts all kinds of awesome videos on her blog!! Like she wrote about, I also got on a pilates kick when Windsor Pilates commercials were shown all the time (early 2000′s I think?) I bought this dvd and a few others from Target and fell in love with Jennifer Kries’s videos!


This woman is seriously flexible and has a perfect body.

I did these videos all the time in high school when I was a cheerleader :) It helped with my flexibility soooo much and made my core feel so strong. Why did I stop? I loved pilates!

In the past year or two I’ve picked up a few yoga dvds…

After I started running 2 years ago, all I heard about was yoga and how it was so great for runners…and it is! But why did I forget about pilates? It also has great benefits for runners, but it seems like so many bloggers practice yoga.  I was SO happy to find Cassey’s blog today to remind me that I should bring it back.  I will only stick with workouts that I truly enjoy.  That being said, I did another spin class tonight and didn’t like it. My foot cramped up big time (weird??) and I got off the bike, filled up my water bottle and walked around until it felt better.  I’m sure spinning will go away after the summer and I’m okay with that.  I know it’s great for my body, but I just don’t enjoy it that much.  I’m sure it will be something that I do every once in awhile once the school year starts up again, but I’m okay with not going every week.

I can’t help it… I LOVE running (even though running and I had a bit of a fight over the weekend), BodyPump, yoga and I really liked pilates in the past so it is making a come back!!
